OpenClaw is one of those tools that someone declares "killed" on LinkedIn every few weeks. First it was Make, then Claude Code, then Dispatch, then Perplexity Computer, then NanoClaw.
Meanwhile Jensen Huang keeps asking CEOs about their "OpenClaw strategy." Both can't be true. So: an honest inventory.
We've been building on OpenClaw productively for over a year via TillClawn 🤡. This isn't marketing – it's what's in the log file.
The 2024/25 promises – reality-checked

What works here works because OpenClaw never tried to be the smarter agent. It's the bus, not the passenger.
⚠️ Half fizzled: multi-agent orchestration
The multi-agent layer narrative was the 2025 demo. Today? Technically fine, but:
- In production, 80% build a single well-routed agent
- "Agent-to-agent negotiation" is a conference slide, not a workflow
- The interesting multi-agent cases increasingly run on NanoClaw or directly in the model (Nex-N2-Pro plans internally)
Verdict: feature exists, rarely needed.
❌ Dead: OpenClaw as universal assistant
This is the uncomfortable part. The "OpenClaw as your personal AI assistant for everything" pitch is no longer defensible in 2026:
- Coding? Claude Code is simply better, faster, less setup.
- Desktop agent? Dispatch, Perplexity Computer & Manus shaped the category in a week.
- Browser tasks? Perplexity Computer with daemon and cron beats any DIY tinkering.
- Quick chat? Nobody opens a self-hosted OpenClaw instance to ask a question.
Anyone who sold OpenClaw as "a better ChatGPT" has lost. Rightly so.
❌ Dead: the pricing-shock narrative
Remember the OpenClaw pricing shock? "Self-hosted = practically free, hyperscalers are highway robbery."
Reality in 2026:
- Hyperscaler inference dropped ~70%
- With Nex-N2-Pro on 8×H100 the cost math is open again
- Power, maintenance, on-call: honestly calculated, often more expensive than Bedrock
Self-hosting stays the right call – but for sovereignty, not TCO. Anyone selling it on price is lying.

What actually happened in 2026
Since the last big What is OpenClaw article, three things reshaped the landscape:
- Frontier models became agentic. Nex-N2-Pro, GPT-5.5, Claude Opus 4.8 plan internally, call tools, hold context. A lot of what used to need an orchestrator, the model now does itself.
- Desktop agents became their own category. Anthropic, Perplexity, and Meta shipped in a week what the OpenClaw community tinkered on for two years.
- Open weights grew up. With Nex-N2-Pro, a workstation cluster is enough for frontier quality – no cloud, no vendor.
These three shifts hollow out OpenClaw as a consumer story. They strengthen it as an enterprise story: whoever wants to bring frontier models sovereign, auditable, and integrated into their systems needs exactly this layer.
The honest 2026 positioning
OpenClaw in 2026 is:
- ✅ The gateway and skill layer for enterprise agents. Full stop.
- ✅ The answer to "how do I safely connect my CRM/ERP/ticketing to models."
- ✅ The self-hosting platform for regulated industries.
- ❌ Not the better coding assistant.
- ❌ Not the better desktop agent.
- ❌ Not the cheaper ChatGPT.
Whoever accepts that ships products that actually get bought in DACH. Whoever fights it writes LinkedIn posts about "OpenClaw is dead."
What does that mean for you?
Developer? Local OpenClaw is a toy. Use Claude Code or Cursor.
Building a product? OpenClaw as backend is stronger than ever in 2026 – but only as infrastructure, not as frontend. You build the frontend yourself.
CIO/CTO of a mid-cap? The Jensen-Huang question stands. "How will agents safely access your systems in 18 months?" If the answer is "some SaaS will handle it," you have a problem. OpenClaw (or an equivalent) is the honest answer.
Building agents for others? Specialize. "We build with OpenClaw" is too generic in 2026. "We deliver regulated on-prem agenting to the mid-market" sells.
Verdict: OpenClaw isn't dead. Just more modest.
The 2025 hype is gone. Good. What's left is a solid infrastructure layer with a clear, smaller niche: enterprise agents that need to run self-hosted, auditable, and integrated.
Less sexy than "the next AI revolution." But it's what pays the bills.
And yes – Jensen Huang keeps asking his question for a reason. The 2026 answer is just more honest: an OpenClaw strategy doesn't mean OpenClaw does everything. It means you have an answer for how your agents reach your systems.
